Brandenburgs and Telemann
Monica and PBO soloists thrilled audiences last year with three of J.S. Bach’s masterpiece Brandenburgs.   Join us for the completion of the cycle, plus a rarely heard overture by Telemann, the other great master of German High Baroque, scored for the same “big band” forces as the rollicking first Brandenburg Concerto.

The Italian in Europe
Rinaldo Alessandrini, director of Rome’s Concerto Italiano, makes his PBO debut with an exploration of the Italian string concerto.   One of the new generation of Baroque specialists from Southern Europe, Alessandrini’s extensive discography has restored the rhythm and passion of the Italian language to the music of Italian composers.   This unique program includes works spanning a century and tracing the influence of Corelli and the Italian “symphonic” style across England, France, Austria, and Bohemia.

Bach Cantatas
Some of Bachs most beautiful music appears in his hundreds of sacred cantatas.   Monica builds the program around the virtuoso violin concerto in D minor, whose music also appears in Cantata 146. Four vocalists, one on a part, and a small string ensemble will perform intimate cantatas featuring solo violin and oboe, much as they were first performed in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, where Bach was director of music for nearly 30 years.

PBO's Messiah sold out early in 2006 -- act now and reserve the best seats for this Portland holiday tradition!

Vivaldi 3 + 11
Monica never ceases to astound with her performances of Vivaldi – be it one of the Four Seasons or an unknown masterpiece.   Always ready for new challenges, Monica debuts solo violin concertos from one of Vivaldi’s last published volumes (1729-30). You’ll also see PBO violinists take center stage playing double concertos from Vivaldi’s rich Opus 3 (1711).

Monica and Vivaldi: pure delight.
