Flutes are some of the oldest instruments of mankind,
but the original flute family—what we call recorders
today—was gradually replaced by the more modern
transverse flutes. Alongside works composed for
recorder and transverse flute, the program includes
two Bach keyboard concertos* arranged by Matthias
Maute for recorder and strings.

Already in the 17th century, double-reed oboes were
a regular addition to the string orchestra. Clarinets,
however, came later, preceded by the now obsolete
chalumeau. Eric Hoeprich, renowned specialist of
historic clarinets, performs alongside oboist Gonzalo
X. Ruiz for a program of rarely heard concertos
directed by Monica Huggett. Tue Apr 24 at 7:30pm (Reed College)
DO NOT MISS this rare opportunity to hear the great
English soprano Dame Emma Kirkby, now three times
honored by the British Crown, whose vocal clarity and
ensemble work with period instruments is the standard
by which all other early music singers are measured.
(No pre-concert talks.)
Prime VIP tickets, including a post-concert reception
with the artists, are available. Fri May 4 & Sat May 5 at 7:30pm (First Baptist); Sun May 6 at 4:00pm (Reed College)
A complete hearing of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations
can be meditative, uplifting, even transformative, and
the ability to effectively perform the work on a variety
of instruments is a testament to the composer’s genius.
This sensitive arrangement of the work for string orchestra
allows the listener to savor every line of Bach’s
extraordinary counterpoint.

Renowned Dutch virtuoso Jaap ter Linden will
perform on both bass members of the viol and violin
families in a program spanning almost 100 years.
Though the viola da gamba was already considered
old-fashioned in Bach’s day, he incorporated two,
alongside the violoncello, in his great Brandenburg
Concerto No. 6 for low strings. Fri Oct 14 & Sat Oct 15 at 7:30pm (First Baptist) Sun Oct 16 at 3:00pm (Reed College)
This season of contrasts and connections starts by
placing the voice alongside the instrument that comes closest to imitating it, the violin. Scottish Soprano, Susan Hamilton, in her West Coast debut, brings her “clear, lithe voice” (The New York Times) to repertory made famous by legendary soprano Emma Kirkby (see April). |
